A
Volunteer Story
Local Volunteers
“Life is good,” says
Jean Berner- one of Sea Island’s most dedicated volunteers.
Currently residing on Seabrook Island and originally from
Detroit, MI, Jean is still making a difference in her seventh year of
volunteering in the office. “Volunteering
at Sea Island Habitat makes me feel good.
Over the years I have made good friends with some of the other
volunteers and staff.”
Jean started out doing whatever was needed.
As time passed she became involved with the Family Services
department processing homeowner applications as well as serving on
the Family Selection Committee. “Jean has been a tremendous asset to our Family Services
Department. Her
dedication and follow-through allow us to help the families of Sea
Island Habitat through the process of home-ownership,” Rodney
Williams, Family Services Director.
Jean is a ray of sunshine spreading encouragement and
joy wherever she goes.
Visiting Volunteers
Sea Island Habitat has
benefited from the time and talent of several out-of-town volunteers who
have come to work with us on their own, out of a simple desire to serve
Habitat (the mild SC climate doesn’t hurt either).
Two couples came at different times in the fall of 2005 in their
RVs and worked with us for a couple weeks each: Jack and Gail Dolan from
Canton, MA
and Charlie and Lucy Schlopp from
Canaan,
NY. Karl Grimm from Merrifield,
MN
blessed us with three weeks of his time last December as we were trying
to finish all of the houses in Sea Island Place. Elmer Dech from
Keene, NH, who had come to work with us a few years ago, returned for a couple
weeks last month and was a great help with all of our maintenance and
rehab projects as we got set up for another busy year of building.
Additionally, Walter and Beverly Shields, from
Stow, MA, after years of vacationing on Kiawah and passing our signs, came to
work with us in January 2006.
We are so grateful to these
volunteers who take their vacation time to serve the families on Johns
Island. We know that it is a
rewarding experience that keeps people coming back. Drew University
came for their 4th service trip to Sea Island Habitat this year and
Sewickley Presbyterian Church is here for their 11th year! They
are from a suburb of Pittsburgh and were so excited about the Steelers in the Super Bowl. :-)
