"Stronger families mean stronger communities, and
decent,
affordable housing can be a gateway to both."

Become a Homeowner!
Sea
Island Habitat for Humanity constructs simple, decent single-family
homes in partnership with families (“Partner Families”) who are not
able to financially qualify for conventional mortgages.
Habitat strives to extend a “hand up” to working families
living in substandard housing—it is not a “hand out.”
Habitat
selects families based on need, willingness to partner, and ability to
pay back the cost of the home, on a no-profit, no-interest 20-year
mortgage.
Habitat
Partner Families must complete 500 total hours of required “Sweat
Equity.” Hours are
completed through work done either in the Habitat offices, the Habitat
ReStore, or on a home-site under the direction of a Habitat
construction supervisor. Partner Families work together with volunteer
teams to build their future home, and homes of their Habitat neighbors. In addition to completing “Sweat Equity” hours, each new
Habitat Homeowner is required to go through an intense, ten-week
financial literacy and home maintenance program.
Sea
Island Habitat holds the interest-free mortgages for all Habitat Partner
Families. Monthly payments
made by each family are then recycled into Habitat’s “Fund for
Humanity”— to build more Habitat homes.

Selection
Information
Prospective
Habitat homeowners must be pre-screened.
This information is passed onto the Family Selection Committee
and if initial qualifications match, a full application will be sent out
to the prospective homeowner.
Upon
completion the application is fully examined by the selection committee
and if conditionally accepted, a home visit is scheduled.
The
Habitat homeownership process is not a quick fix to homeownership
problems, but it is a permanent fix. From beginning to
end, it will take on average 8-12 months for a family to move into their
home.
