Island, SC – On April 8th, 2004, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity
had a wonderful surprise from NBC’s The Today Show.
Al Roker and the “Lend a Hand” Penske truck pulled into Sea Island Habitat’s
Sea Island Place neighborhood and surprised homeowners and volunteers with
over $125,000 of donated items including mattresses, linens, pots and
pans, sofas, baby cribs and car seats!
Sears and Ethan Allen were responsible for the amazing donations,
all of which will be handed out to the homeowners of Sea Island Habitat
for Humanity. In
addition to the donation of in-kind goods, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity
was featured in live segments with Al
Roker and a taped piece on Sea Island Habitat’s
homeowners, volunteers and donors also appeared showcasing the 3rd
oldest affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
Also, Al Roker was presented with a plate of shrimp and grits from
Chef Robert Dickson of Robert’s of Charleston – adding the flavor of
Charleston to the event! “This is amazing.
I cannot believe the generosity of Ethan Allen, Sears and The Today
Show. We feel so blessed”,
states George Miller, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity’s Board of
Directors President. Helping
unload the truck of items, representatives from the West Ashley Ethan
Allen Store and Sears of Northwoods Mall were present along with 60
volunteers including students from SUNY Binghington and First
Congregational Church of Long Island, NY.
“This is a great day – thank you Al and The Today Show”,
states Brian Sturgell, Sea Island Habitat Golf Chairman.
