 Apostles Build House

12 diverse churches joining forces to help change the lives of a Sea Island Habitat Partner Family.

Up to the minute status:

1-9-07:  Planning has begun, be the first to sign up as an Apostle Church!

2-5-07:  A grant of matching funds has been applied for to cover half the cost of the house.

2-12-07:  RECEIVED THE GRANT!!!!  :)

2-28-07:  Informational meeting at Bethany UMC on James Island - open to church leadership.

3-1-07:  The meeting went great!  Five churches were represented and all were enthusiastic to participate - we'll see who becomes the first Apostle Church!  :)

3-15-07:  The FIRST Apostle Church is...Bethany United Methodist Church of James Island!  Welcome aboard, we're excited for another special partnership between your church and this housing ministry.

4-12-07:  Two more Apostle Churches committed!  One of which is St. Andrews Parish United Methodist Church - praise the Lord!

4-25-07:  The other Apostle mentioned above will be the Folly Beach United Methodist and St. John's United Methodist Church Charge!  Together, these two servants of the Lord will serve as an Apostle in the upcoming build.

5-7-07:  St. John's Episcopal Church is the FOURTH Apostle Church - this build is already 1/3 of the way full!

5-17-07:  Seacoast West Church's "Servant's Heart" ministry has joined in as the FIFTH Apostle!!

5-29-07:  Cornerstone Church of Charleston felt the calling to join & has become the SIXTH Apostle!!  We're now half way full.  :)

7-12-07:  Holy Cross Episcopal Church joined as the SEVENTH Apostle & one of their parishioners is donating the plumbing labor & rough plumbing parts for the house!

8-10-07:  Martin Luther Lutheran Church became the EIGHTH Apostle & is actually even planning on helping in another build in 2008.

10-1-07:  Bethany United Methodist Church of Summerville became the NINTH Apostle just in time for the kickoff this Saturday (Oct. 6)!

10-6-07:  Framing Day!!  Unfortunately due to the rain, the cement slab did not have time to cure properly, so we could not frame the house on it.  However, volunteers & the Gonzales Family showed up & they all were able to work together on other houses.

10-11-07:  House is under construction!

10-13-07:  Cornerstone Church of Charleston was the first Apostle Church to work together.

10-20-07:  Martin Luther Lutheran Church had a great day working on the house.

12-8-07:  Seacoast West was the last church to build on the site, wrapping up a great project!

Gonzales Family in their new home!  (plus Carolina's brother - who won't live there)

taken on: 1-4-07

What is an Apostles Build House?

In an Apostles Build project, 12 churches, or coalitions of churches, come together to build a Habitat for Humanity house.  They raise a bulk of the money and provide the labor and prayer support to build a house in partnership with a local family.  The idea of going out into the community to serve others, in the way that Jesus’ apostles served, has attracted individuals in many churches.  With Habitat for Humanity, churches can share God’s love by building houses.

What must an Apostle church do?

Each church is asked to:

  • Energize volunteers for at least one day of building

  • Fundraise 1/12 the cost of the home, for this build, it will be $2,500

  • Pray, pray, pray! ...for the partner family, for the ministry, for the other churches

It's that simple!

We will also provide opportunities for the partner family to meet your congregation - whether it be on the construction site or at your church.

Why become an Apostle church?

Simply put: faith in action.  Through being involved with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, a church is able to put into practice the lessons they learn with Christ as their example.  What better way to emulate His love, than to be a carpenter for a day or two? ...experienced or not!

This is a realistic and tangible goal; everyone is welcome to experience the joy of changing lives!

When is the build?

Building will begin on the framing day, October 6, 2007.  Following this, Apostle churches will pick specific build day(s) throughout the fall.
